What is it? It is
a listing of over 1200 known cultivar epithets in
Brugmansia. The epithet is the part of the cultivar name that
distinguishes it (i.e.
Brugmansia
‘Ecuador Pink’ is the cultivar name, and ‘Ecuador Pink’ is the epithet). The
listing includes information (where available) on where the name has been
established, if the name transgresses the provisions of the 2004 Code, if the
plant no longer exists, the breeding history grouping to which the cultivar
belongs
[click here for explanation], its parentage, flower color and form, hybridizer,
discoverer and seedling parents, country of origin and year of introduction.
Copying
and ownership. Individual pieces of data have been (and will continue to be)
derived from and cross-checked with a great many sources (real and virtual) in
the public domain. Nevertheless, although the Register and Checklist can be
downloaded, it, as a whole document,
remains the copyright of ABADS Inc. and may not be copied without permission.
It will be regularly updated and therefore copies from any particular time will
soon become out of date; it is therefore unwise to rely on copies for
up-to-date information. Linking to it is permitted and encouraged, however.

What is the
difference between a register and a checklist? A checklist is simply a list
of names in use. Names are included regardless of whether they have been
hard-copy published or meet other requirements of the 2004 Code. Names which
are in the checklist but not registered may not have been established and hence
are not ‘fixed’. The ICRA’s Register is a list of names accepted as permanently
established and fixed because they meet all the conditions for establishment
set out in Art 24.1 of the 2004 Code.
We have combined our Register and Checklist into one
document, and distinguish the more than 700 established and registered names
with
red font.
A few invalid cultivar epithets have appeared in the public domain without
associated plants, these are entered in
green italics. Cultivar epithets which
to our knowledge so far have not been
established (i.e. have not been published in print or which have been published
but which transgress the 2004 Code) are entered in ordinary black font.
What is it for? It
has several uses. First, it is a reference for checking what epithets are
already in use and therefore not to be used for new cultivars [Note that listed
names that have not been established are technically open to being established
for other Brugmansias, however we discourage this as it only adds to confusion;
it can happen accidentally though]. Second, it is a reference for checking when
names were established, which is useful when it is discovered that a name has
been used twice and a determination has to be made about which cultivar should
be accepted with the name concerned. Third, it provides information about
crosses that have already been successfully made, and for working out
attributes that particular cultivars may carry as parents. Fourth, it is an
historical summary of the creative activity of
Brugmansia breeders and a source of statistics about
Brugmansia cultivars.
Where is it going?
Although our Register and Checklist is already the most comprehensive
available, it remains a work in progress. First, of course, new cultivars will
be added to it as they are introduced. Second, our on-going research through
horticultural literature and the internet, and communication with breeders will
likely yield cultivar names we have missed, places of establishment of names we
have yet to record, and, we hope, parentage data for many cultivars for which
this is still missing. We will also be working on providing links from the list
to images of the cultivars.
