Thanks for your question.
Yes they can sucker from the roots, and some varieties seem to do so more than others. However your smaller plants may be seedlings - does the big plant make seed pods?
If they are suckers then the leaves and flowers on the smaller plants should be identical to the mother plant, and you may be able to find where they join the mother plant's roots underground. If they are seedlings they will almost certainly differ from the mother plant and not be connected to it.
